At one point in the show, Jackson explains to the staff of U.S. Army that for any wormhole travel, seven symbols are necessary to mark coordinates. Six of them indicate the destination, mapping stars or constellations to locate the place to go. The seventh and last symbol indicates the point of origin. In the first TV series they found the address for Atlantis which included an 8th symbol to designate the galaxy.
