The only direction that writer Rona Jaffe gave was to the actor portraying Paul, who Hope Lange goes on a blind date with. When Lange says that it's not his fault, he initially replied "I know" as if hurt, rejected. Jaffe told him to say it as if it meant nothing to him either way: he'd simply be on to his next date.
