Victoria's uncle Ernst Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, was the fifth son of King George III. He served in the British Army during the wars with France. Cumberland received his disfiguring scar in 1793 after being struck by a sabre during a battle with French cavalry. He eventually lost sight in that eye as well.
