Director Sir Ridley Scott made Prometheus to create his own backstory to Alien (1979), and thereby decanonize the events of Alien vs. Predator (2004) (and by extension Aliens vs. Predator 2 (2007)), which he thoroughly disliked. Fans have since speculated that he may have actually re-imagined Alien vs. Predator and molded it into his preferred vision, due to the notable similarities between the two movies: both feature a secret expedition into unknown territory, based on archaeological clues from several of Earth's civilizations; both expeditions find evidence of an advanced alien culture that has been instrumental in early human development; they also encounter a second alien species that is hostile to both the humans and the advanced aliens, and changes the expedition into a fight for survival. In both movies, a sickly company CEO called "Weyland" comes along to ensure his company's legacy, but meets his demise at the hands of one of the advanced aliens (in both cases, by Ian Whyte, who played both the main Engineer and the Lead Predator). And in both films, the expedition is led by a female protagonist who has lost her father, and desperately pleads to her fellow crewmembers to stop the alien creatures from reaching (and thereby decimating) Earth civilization; however, in the end, she has to fend for herself against a giant alien creature that has been awoken from stasis. There are also many instances of near-similar scenes, such as expedition members listening to presentations while aboard a ship; a scientist and a crewmember discussing the merits or folly of bringing weapons on a scientific exploration; people searching through dark corridors with flashlights while translating ancient texts; an antagonized relationship between a nerdy scientist and a tough crewmember who end up getting lost together; and in the final moments, a hostile alien creature birthing from one of the advanced aliens, and letting out an ominous cry.
