When Pat Phoenix returned to the role of Elsie Tanner in 1976 after three years away, the then-new producer Bill Podmore set certain conditions due to Phoenix's troublesome behaviour in the past. One of these conditions was that Phoenix should not attempt to introduce her own expensive clothing into the working class Elsie's wardrobe, as she had done in the past. Phoenix broke this condition on day one by insisting on wearing an expensive raincoat in her opening scenes (shot on location without Podmore present). When told Podmore would never allow her to wear the coat on screen again, Phoenix responded that he would have to - because as unlikely as it was that Elsie could afford such a coat, it was even less likely that she would buy it and only wear it once.
