Hollywood folklore claims that when a Fox executive called Liz Taylor to make her an initial offer for this film, she was soaking in a bathtub and in a playful mood. The call was reputedly answered by Taylor's then husband Eddie Fisher and when Fisher told her what the call was about, Taylor laughed and said, "Tell them I'll do it...for a million dollars!" The executive was rumored not to have gotten the joke, and Taylor's initial salary set a new record. With production delays, penalties, perks and point participation in every dollar the film grossed, Taylor's eventual compensation is said to have ballooned to well over $5 million...
