Although common place in Superhero film and television today, Christopher Reeve was the first actor to specifically work out and add muscle for a superhero role. Prior to this film; a hero's physique was either faked, such as George Reeves wearing padded muscles in the 1950s Adventures of Superman (1952) television series. Or actors were hired who were already known for their muscles, such as two-time Mr. Universe Lou Ferrigno for L'incredibile Hulk (1977). An initially very thin Reeve was offered a padded suit, but found it uncomfortable to wear and chose instead to add muscles for real.
