Colonel Arbuthnot uses the phrase "three-pipe yarn," a takeoff on a phrase used by another fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes ("it was quite a three-pipe problem"). Sir John Gielgud (Beddoes) played Holmes in a series of radio broadcasts.
