Adam Baldwin was originally supposed to do principal photography for three months. He ended up doing it for nine months. He later stated that he was young and eager, and would sometimes clash with director Stanley Kubrick over the number of takes and the hazards that Kubrick would put his actors through. He now regrets not fully appreciating the extraordinary experience of being part of Kubrick's process and free from time constraints at the time.
