Chloé Zhao described the film as a melting pot of East-West influences: Jack Kirby's original work, previous comic-book films (Marvel and otherwise), Studio Ghibli films, Terrence Malick films, the Fainaru fantajî (1987) series, and her love of science fiction and fantasy films/TV shows/novels and manga comics, specifically Enigmi alieni (2009) and the works of historian/author Yuval Noah Harari.
