The room in which the Philosopher's Stone is in, also has lots of treasure which is trapped behind bars. When Papillon and the others try to free it, they set off a booby trap and are unable to retrieve the treasure. This would be the fourth floor they descended to. In Dante's Inferno, the Fourth Circle of Hell is Greed.
