McMillan & Wife used The formula of Nick & Nora for television and was adapted for 1970's San Francisco.Dashiell Hammett's "The Thin Man" Nick & Nora Charles are from San Francisco. They banter, drink and drive a car with an engine up front of a train. Mac & Sally are not rich, alcoholic going out to parties and such. Mac was Police Commissioner and Sally was not rich like Nora. The formula used was the Top Cop and his wife fall into a case and solve it together living a modest life albeit with Mildred the cook and keeper of the house. Like the movies, they drove about in a fancy two-seater car. Their 1950's MG was small, intimidate versus The oversized 1930's Package with only a front seat. Still, it was a tip of the hat to the perfect couple. In short, the formula adapted a married couple that fell into murder mysteries solving them with love and banter. And, for a time, they drove together in a fancy car few Americans or San Franciscans could afford. The complex sabotage that led to the hour long show's demise is for a mystery time slot, itself.
