Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and hijack their internal resources so that the bacteria start producing viral proteins instead of their own. Consequently, the depiction of the World Engine as a bacteriophage is most appropriate, as the device was intended to hijack Earth resources, for the benefit of Kryptonians.
