Director James Gunn was brought in to write and potentially direct the sequel after Disney fired him from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) following an online feud whereby some of Gunn's past controversial Twitter jokes were unearthed. Following a massive fan outcry and an online petition to reinstate him, Disney subsequently rehired him, but allowed him to complete this film before beginning work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023).
