While backstage at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, Vin Diesel hinted in an interview that this movie would be set in New York City. He stated that "Fast & Furious 7 (2015) was for Paul and Fast & Furious 8 (2017) will be from Paul". Before his tragic death, Paul Walker told Diesel that "Furious 8" was guaranteed to be made. Diesel reiterated the dedication in numerous other interviews while promoting this movie. This explains why the beginning of this movie opens with a street race, paying homage to the first two movies in the series, whose opening scenes contained street races involving Paul Walker's character.
