Mortal Kombat: Rebirth (2010) and Mortal Kombat (2011) director Kevin Tancharoen was going to direct the film with Oren Uziel, who wrote the original short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. Shooting was expected to begin in March 2012 with a budget of well under $100 million and a release date of 2013, coordinated with the next installment of the video game series being produced by the same studios, but it was later delayed due to budget constraints. Tancharoen eventually left the project after making season 2 of Mortal Kombat (2011).
