Justin Theroux, who also co-wrote Tropic Thunder (2008) with Stiller, was hired to write and direct this sequel. By the following month, Stiller confirmed he would be co-writing the script, stating, "We're in the process of getting a script written, so it's in the early stages. But yeah, it's going to happen." At some later, unspecified point, Stiller had taken over as director.
