Ed Lauter, who played the school guidance counselor (Dick Healy), got sick in season three. He died (on October 16, 2013, two weeks shy of his 75th birthday) of mesothelioma, after being diagnosed five months earlier. His final episode was Shameless: Survival of the Fittest (2013), season three, episode twelve.
