Throughout this film, Lieutenant Saavik is addressed as "Mister Saavik" despite being a female. This is not an error. In the military, the correct way for another officer to address a Lieutenant is "Mister..." followed by the persons surname, and is not gender specific any more than "Captain" is gender specific. However, once that Lieutenant is being addressed by a lower rank and is female she will be addressed as "Ma'am", not "Sir".
