One of the aircrew members tells Maude that she has no authority aboard their B-17 flight, calling her an "auxiliary civilian". To which, Maude replies "Correction: I am a flight officer". The aircrewman is correct in that members of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) were indeed civilians and hence had no authority over military personnel.
