The movie remains very vague about what the Soul Stone does, or what its purpose is. In the comics, the interior of the Soul Stone was a paradise-like world where the souls of Adam Warlock's foes were able to live in peace. Also, when Adam Warlock, Gamora and Pip the Troll were killed in battle against Thanos, their souls were temporarily imprisoned in the Soul Stone until they were called back when Thanos gained the Infinity Gauntlet, ten years later. In a Q&A session, the Russo brothers have explained that the Soul Stone has the ability to manipulate souls, or rather the essence of a person; when Thanos speaks to the child version of Gomorra near the end of the movie, he goes into the Soul Stone which creates a familiar surrounding, as well as a spiritual representation of his dead daughter. Furthermore, during the battle on Titan, Thanos briefly uses the Soul Stone to identify the real Dr. Strange from among his many mirror images.
