Before the film's release, it was announced in July 2020 that an HBO Max television series based on the Gotham City Police Department was in the works, and it would serve as a prequel to the film. The series was to be executive produced by Matt Reeves, Dylan Clark, Terence Winter, Daniel Pipski, and Adam Kassan. However, problems started to arise over storyline issues and the notion that the protagonist is a corrupted cop. Winter eventually left the project due to creative differences and was replaced by Joe Barton. Still, the problems remained. In March 2022, the series was announced by Reeves to no longer be in development.
