There are references to the farmers being so poor that they eat millet rather than rice. Gorobei says it was so bad he could barely swallow it. Millet is often prepared by grinding it, fermenting it to break it down, and then boiling it to the point it becomes a sticky brownish loaf. The smell and taste is an acquired one at best. This is a staple food in a number impoverished locations around the world, including some rural places in and around equatorial Africa.
