Director David Carson was initially uninterested in the remake, but he was impressed by Bryan Fuller's script, so he sat down and screened the 1976 version with his 13-year-old daughter and two of her friends. The girls didn't find it scary and complained that they saw the now-cliched jump-scare-ending coming. The girls' underwhelming reaction is what prompted him to take the job.
