The film claims that the Necronomicon can be used to communicate with the Elder Gods. The Elder Gods is a name used by August Derleth and other post-Lovecraft writers of the Cthulhu Mythos in reference to a group of recurring deities in their stories. These included deities such as 1) Bast, the Goddess of Cats, 2) Nodens, the Lord of the Great Abyss, and 3) Vorvadoss the Flaming One.
