Just before the film started production, one of the producers announced that they wanted to use the Bruce Springsteen song "Born in the U.S.A.", but attempts to secure the song were unsuccessful. This was fortunate, as the song was about a Vietnam war veteran's disenchantment with America. Somewhat embarrassingly, the song was also a favorite of then-president Ronald Reagan who, like the Top Gun producer, was only familiar with the song's tag line and not the complete lyrics.
