Kate Winslet was offered the role during filming of Revolutionary Road (2008), but declined the offer; in part because shooting began weeks after Revolutionary Road would finish. When she was discussing the role with friend Leonardo DiCaprio, he looked at her and said "you should have done it." Following Nicole Kidman's departure from the film, and scheduling changes, she was offered the role again and accepted.
