Grid was possibly some sort of leader to the Xenomorphs in the Pyramid, as it seems stronger and smarter, or at least more tactically adept, than the other Xenos around it. In the novelization, it is described that Grid grows bigger and even smarter during the ritual, which has led to a fan theory that it may be molting into a new Queen to replace the old one.
