The production schedule was so long that producer Sam Spiegel insisted on a two-month break. This afforded him the chance to find a filming location that was less arduous than Jordan, ultimately settling on Spain. Anthony Quinn, Sir Anthony Quayle, Sir Alec Guinness, and Omar Sharif all took advantage of the break to work on other movies. Quayle starred in H.M.S. Defiant (1962), while Quinn starred in Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962).
