At the Collinwood ball, Carolyn repeats the first lyrics of "The Ballad of Dwight Fry" to her mother Elizabeth, causing her to get tense. The lyrics ("Mommy, where's daddy? He's been gone for so long. Do you think he'll ever come home?") hint at a subplot from Dark Shadows (1966): Carolyn believes Elizabeth murdered Carolyn's father.
