Arthur P. Jacobs originally bought the rights in 1971. He planned for Sir David Lean to direct, and hired his collaborator Robert Bolt to script. Lean passed on the project, and Charles Jarrott was brought in as replacement, with a new script by John Boorman's regular scribe Rospo Pallenberg. Jacob's death in 1973 put an end to the project.
