Since the Soviets were subsequently able to use Cuba as a port of call for their nuclear-armed submarines, it was possible when in port for nuclear weapons to have been fired from Cuba. However, they could just as easily be launched at sea. The first nuclear armed US submarine was launched in 1959. The first such Soviet submarine was launched in 1961, a year before the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is notable that the first of these was the K-19, a vessel that would later suffer a devastating radiation leak as dramatized in the film, K-19 (2002).
