Gary Houston read for the role of Jerry Lundegaard but was instead cast as the Irate Customer. Houston knew William H. Macy from Macy's days in Chicago where they both appeared in Goodman Theatre's production of "The Front Page." After the Irate Customer scene was shot they met for dinner in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis where Houston interviewed Macy for the Chicago Tribune. The article appeared Feb.15,1995, headlined "Sweet Home: Now a Hollywood Star, William Macy Sees Chicago as his Acting Test Lab."
