The name Eragon (stylized as eragon with all lowercase letters) was inspired by two things: dragon, with one letter changed, and era-gone, as in a time gone by. Critics of Paolini who have accused him of plagiarism have also noted that the name is similar to Aragorn from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings novels.
