When Steve Martin was connected to the film, it was quite different in many ways. Martin's version of Fletcher Reed would already be successful in his career, still married (but a bad marriage) and they would have multiple kids. When Jim Carrey was cast in the role, elements were tweaked to better suit his age (Fletcher Reed is up and coming in his career, divorced, has one child).
