The film introduces the character of the Nome King from the Oz novels. The King (also known with the aliases "Roquat" and "Ruggedo") was introduced in the novel "Ozma of Oz" (1907) as a king who owns a growing number of slaves. He became the most frequent antagonist throughout the entire book series, making his last canonical appearance in 1937. In his various appearances, he is mainly driven by either greed or a need for revenge.
