Geoffrey Lewis / Luther Driggers was a member of Eastwood's group of stock players. During the trial he is seated in the position of juror number one and is always in frame when the camera is pointing over the witness box towards the left. Every time this happens, Lewis makes an obvious gesture - scratching his head, lifting his pencil, etc. This was a trick that he had picked up from Steve McQueen, who would always be doing something in the background in order to attract the eye of the viewer and literally "upstage" the main actors in the scene.
