The scene showing Second Officer Charles Lightoller clinging to an overturned lifeboat is historically accurate. The boat - identified as Collapsible B - landed on the deck upside down after it fell from the roof of the officers' quarters, and was washed away by the rising water in this position. According to Walter Lord's A Night to Remember, the forward funnel fell and narrowly missed Collapsible B, and the ensuing wave washed the ship 30 yards away from the sinking ship. Two other lifeboats went to Collapsible B's rescue at dawn when it began to sink, bringing all the survivors back to the Carpathia. Because Captain E.J. Smith and First Officer William Murdoch's bodies were never found, Charles Herbert Lightoller was the most senior officer to survive the sinking.
