Director Alex Garland said that he had been obsessed with the Green Man for over a decade. According to Rory Kinnear, Garland was very involved in the character's development. Although he allowed Kinnear to flesh out the character himself in the way he walked or behaved, Garland helped applying the final stages of makeup on Kinnear himself.
