The neon-outlined guitars and machine guns were not an original idea. In the box office hit La danza delle luci (1933), director Mervyn LeRoy included a big production number in which a bank of violins were outlined in neon. One of which can be viewed at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C..
