Gary Sinise was the first choice to play Detective Elliot Stabler. He went on to star as head New York City Crime Scene Investigator Detective Mac Taylor on CSI: NY (2004), and then as Senior F.B.I. Supervisory Special Agent Jack Garrett on Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (2016).
