According to the details provided by Joy to Jack, she might have been kidnapped in 2008 if the film is presumed to take place in 2015. 2008 was the same year when the real life Elisabeth Fritzl was rescued from her father Josef Fritzl's captivity after 24 years. Emma Donoghue would later write the novel Room in 2010 inspired by the events which would eventually lead to this film adaptation. Amusingly in 2016, a year after the film's release, Josef Fritzl would be moved to solitary confinement due to continued prisoner assaults on him.
