The movie's script took around five years to complete, and the next step was to find the right director to do it justice. Pierce Brosnan's suggestion of Roger Donaldson as director proved to be a popular choice. The actor had previously worked with Donaldson on Dante's Peak - La furia della montagna (1997), and Donaldson is much admired for his action films and political thrillers. When shown the script, Donaldson leapt at the chance to bring it to the screen. Donaldson said: "I was first attracted to the script, because I discovered it to be something out of the ordinary, and felt I could make a suspenseful entertaining film from it. The opportunity to collaborate with Pierce Brosnan again made it all the more appealing, as I knew Pierce would inhabit the character of Peter Devereaux like no one else could."
