As stated in the in-character "introduction" to the book, A Princess of Mars, Carter might not have been directly related to Edgar Rice Burroughs, but as a frequent as well as long-term visitor to the southern plantation home of Burroughs' father, Carter became known to him as "Uncle Jack". This was shortly before the Civil War, in the late 1850s. In the second novel of the John Carter series, The Gods of Mars, the in-character introduction clears things up, as he refers to Carter as his "great-uncle".According to the introduction, Carter became a successful prospector in Arizona after the war, and had become quite wealthy. He returned for a visit in about 1875, at which time Burroughs observed that he had not aged a day over those 16 years. His last visit was in 1885, during which Burroughs noted that he seemed to have a deep and melancholy longing for the stars, often seen standing outdoors at night with his arms stretched upwards as if in supplication. Burroughs' receipt of the telegram was a year later, on March 4th, 1886. Carter's adventures on Mars took place during the ten-year span between 1865 and 1875, with the following decade spent in search of his goal.
