Quentin Tarantino originally intended to cast a Japanese actress to play O-Ren Ishii, but before casting began, he saw Lucy Liu's work in Pallottole cinesi (2000) and immediately changed O-Ren into a Chinese-Japanese-American, so that Liu could play the part.
