Director James Gunn typically does extensive storyboards for his films, but the opening shot rotates out of a puddle's reflection on the ground to reveal Savant (Michael Rooker) and his ball was a spontaneous decision on the day. Gunn stated, "I saw that it had this cool reflection, I knew that we had this circular camera movement thing out in the truck, and we brought it in and we did that opening shot."
