The inspiration for Doyle's lost world was Mt. Roraima and other tepuis of the Venezuelan highlands. These 3000 foot tall, cold, wet, flat-top mesas rise up out of a hot, dry scrub desert and are ecologicaly and evolutionarily isolated. Some species on each tepui are unique to that tepui.
