The Flying Dutchman is based on 17th century designs of Dutch and Swedish warships, particularly the Vasa, a Swedish vessel that sank at Stockholm harbor on her maiden voyage in 1628. Refloated and salvaged in 1961, she became a museum ship, and provided inspiration for the film makers.
