The Merovengian is named after a dynasty that ruled the Franks (in southern and central areas of modern-day France and Germany) for some three hundred years, from 486 to 751. The name translates as "sons of Merovech" who was the founder of this dynasty, and they were said to descend from the child that Jesus of Nazareth supposedly had with Mary Magdalene, who had fled to France after Jesus' Crucifixion. The Merovingian kings are known for preventing Islamic gains in their lands in central and eastern Europe. The dynasty was ended by the Pope, who ordered that their ruler be deposed and a new ruler from a different line be installed in his stead.
