For the 10th anniversary of the series, William Hartnell was too ill to properly participate in Doctor Who: The Three Doctors: Episode One (1972). As a result, he was filmed separately from the rest of the cast during pre production. This footage was then edited into the storyline, with Hartnell appearing on a small screen to "interact" with Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee.
